This granite formation is a tor, known by geomorphologists as either a
castle koppie or kopje. These terms describe any large, free-standing rock
outcrop that rises abruptly from the surrounding terrain, which is usually
smoother and gentler. This one is more like a tor on top of another larger tor, which in turn projects from smoother and gentler
terrain. Getting here is not easy, though it was literally a walk in the
park.
This photograph is the result of my second attempt on two consecutive
mornings to capture the sunrise here. I was too late on the first attempt
because I got sidetracked by
this.
