The narrow cascade of Erskine Falls plummets 30 meters (98 feet) into the lush gully of the Erskine River. Sheltered gullies like these have a dense canopy of non-eucalypt tree species, climbers, broad-leafed shrubs and tree ferns that provide umbrellas of shade for a variety of ferns, shrubs, mosses and a myriad of other life.
I first photographed Erskine Falls in May of 2017, which is late autumn and a particularly dry time of year. This photograph was captured on my second visit in September of 2025, which is early spring and a particularly wet time of year. Regardless, the photograph is not representative of September water flows because 2025 was the driest year in decades. Among the first things I noticed on this recent visit was that the entire gully floor was rearranged by floods that have occurred since 2017.
