Green Heron, Ready to Strike

This green heron is poised on a rock, ready to strike at passing fish. These birds are permanent residents in the extreme Southeast and Southwest United States. Their breeding range encompasses the eastern half of the United States and the western coast all the way to Canada. They are known to use insects and other items to lure fish within the striking range of their very long necks.
